Tech Commentators and early adopters are looking at “the real-time web” to provide the next generation of post-Google search. Thanks to blogs, tweets, and social networks, the number of people posting new content online has increased dramatically in recent years. New and interesting content is hitting the web in real time, and there’s a huge appetite to find the best of it right now. Demand is growing for a new search paradigm that prioritizes results based on factors like freshness, and current social relevance.
Of course, Google and the other large web search engines can index web pages moments after they have been published. However, traditional web search engines rank their results by multiple signals that heavily favor a large established publisher like Wikipedia or CNN. For example, if you search for “Barack Obama” on Google it will return results from Wikipedia or official government websites - library style information that is dependable but doesn’t reflect the current social interest in the President right now. Real-time web search services like OneRiot and Twitter provide results which reflect what people are talking and thinking about, from funny videos to important breaking news. “I would compare it to getting yesterday’s weather on the evening news, interesting but it does not tell me if I should bring an umbrella to work.” Says Tobias Peggs
Now, Surf Canyon makes Google real-time by adding OneRiot and Twitter results to their Google pages.
Using semantic real-time implicit personalization, Surf Canyon develops Discovery for SearchTM. This patent-pending technology is embedded in a browser extension that can work with virtually any third-party search engine, and assists users in finding relevant information that’s buried within the often overwhelming amount of search results. Users with the Surf Canyon browser extension (available for IE and FFx) can opt in to show appropriate OneRiot and Twitter search results on their Google pages. A user searches Google, and the Surf Canyon technology detects when a suitable result is available from the real time web and serves that to the user at the top of the page.
